"How Trigger Warnings Are Hurting Mental Health On Campus" talks about how many campuses filter certain words and topics that teachers and staff can talk about. Because of this, students are not facing the world as the "real world." The reading suggests that campus staff should address the issues and problematic topics rather than avoiding talking about the topics at all. Talking about the topics will deteriorate the student's mental health - many campus suggest. However, not talking about the topics could also deteriorate the student's mental health as well. The students will not know what is it like when they graduate from the university - a world with no filter.
This leads to another ground I would like to talk about - Instagram. Instagram is a realm of social media that allows users to post pictures of themselves. Users are allowed to add filters to their pictures and a description about the picture. Instagram also allows users to archive their pictures if they feel like they do not want their picture seen to the general public after they have posted. Usually, when we look at these pictures, we always think about the person and how they're having great time. But, do we really know what is happening behind the scenes? Do we really know what happens behind the picture that was taken, edited, and filtered?
To be honest, we really don't know what happened in the picture - since a picture is a worth a thousand words. Trigger warnings are also worth a thousand words. Filtering the two prevents us from seeing the reality that is the actually world.
Question: What would the university be like if the trigger words were not filtered? Will students of color (in particular) be able to walk around campus safely?
