“Berkeley Free Speech Movement:
Paving the way for campus activism” by Robby Cohen talks about the history of
freedom of speech movements in Berkeley. The students fought against the campus
to end racial discrimination and segregation. “Coddling of the American Mind” by
Greg Lukianoff explains the changing methods of teaching.“Coddling of the
American Mind” has diminished the effectiveness of college campus by attempting
to support every single individual succeed. In total, the students’ ability to
critically think for themselves have diminished.
“Coddling of the American Mind” has affected
for my generation since I started school. The schools attempt to help every
single individual regardless of what economic state their families are in. In
doing so, the school become results driven that they shift their focus from ‘learn
the material’ to ‘memorize the material’. Also standardized testing such as SAT
focuses on ‘learning’ about the trick questions and memorizing formulas from
every math level.
The Berkeley protests have a strong
reminder of the UC Davis pepper spray incident. College campuses only care
about their own well being rather than supporting the students. Therefore, they
will increase tuition and increase the gap between themselves and the students.
Is it
possible for college campuses to stop ‘coddling’ the students?
