In Mark Tseng Putterman’s, “What Asian Americans Are Bringing to
Campus Movements for Racial Justice,” he speaks about the injustices
towards Asian Americans. Putterman brings up movements like Black Lives Matter and
how Asian Americans aren’t sure where they fit in in these movements where Asians
aren’t represented either. He points out the lack of activists that are Asian and
the limited amount of Asians that are involved in these movements.
In
what I have learned, or at least in my experience, I grew up being taught to
stay out of other’s people’s business. I was taught to mind my own business and
not cause any trouble. I can see where this can cause a lack in Asian American
involvement in political issues and movements. This may be why we do not
commonly see Asian Americans speak up about an issue or when they see an
injustice happening. However, if Asian Americans, or anyone wants to work
towards less racial discrimination by movements, it is best to help each other.
As an Asian American, I believe that a first step towards that goal would be
supporting other causes even if it doesn’t have to do with just Asians, it is
for the better. There is always a benefit to helping others in one way or
another.
Question:
What are some ways to get Asian Americans more involved in movements?
