ASA 002 A02 - Week 9
Solidarity Movements
In “Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans” by Soya Jung, Jung goes in depth about the current situation with “white vs. black.” She then talks about how Asians fit in that situation. She talks about how the model minority leaves Asians in the middle of the fight between “white vs. black.” She also briefly talked about how because the standing of Asian Americans in the racial tension is ambiguous, many Asians are either with the Black Lives Movement, indifferent, or with the “other side.” This stuck with me because I know many Asians that are on different sides of race movements so to speak. However, as Jung said, there are many Asian Americans on the side of the blacks and through supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, Asian Americans can bring awareness to their own issues that are widely ignored because Asian Americans are really considered “invisible.” So, although people wonder where Asian Americans are on race movements, they are there. Slowly but surely, more and more Asians Americans are getting more and more vocal in activist movements and with that, we will be able to show are solidarity with racial movements and also bring awareness to their issues as well.
Questions
When do you think Asian Americans will be able to get the awareness on their own racial issues.
