Week 9

In "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans" by Soya Jung, Jung talks about why Asian Americans should care more about other racial movements. One point that stood out to me from the article was when she mentioned that Asians were in between “blackness and whiteness.” It brings up the question of what is the position of Asian Americans in today’s society. If Asians are seen to reap the benefits of white supremacy but also held to the standard of model minority, what toll will this cause? Asians are not seen as “white” or “black,” we are our own class that the society does not recognize.
This article made me question my own standing in society. What will I become? What should I get involved in? I know of the divide between races and the stereotypes placed upon each group, but how can we get away from those pre-perceptions placed on us as a group and be recognized as our own individual? This article also made me realize that solidarity exists between races, it doesn’t matter what the color of your skin is, it matters in the fact that we support each other as a group and speak up to help each other.

Question: How can Asian Americans find their place in society if we are seen as in between blackness and whiteness?
