Week 8 - Joanne Agus

This week's article, What Asian Americans Are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice by Mark Putterman, discusses the trend seen amongst asian american students in college campuses on social justice. The author also mentions the tendency for asian american students to not participate as much in issues between the "Blacks and Whites" and are also often overlooked and underrepresented when it comes to their own issues. In the article some students advocate asian americans around the nation to form stronger bonds with other minority groups, incuding black and latinx students. In a way I can see why asian americans should also advocate movements like Black Lives Matter since they are both groups of minorities, and that they also understand parts of the struggles that Black students go through. However, it seems like the article also discusses the fact that asian americans should be on the blacks' side vs the whites to create solidarities amongst the minorities, not because it is the right thing to do. In my opinion, regardless if a social justice movement is amongst minorities, asian americans should still be a part of it and use their voice. I feel like by doing so, this will create the image that asian americans will not only speak up when their community is attacked, rather that they actually have a significant voice that is important to hear out.

Q: What are some of the ways that asian americans can support social justice movement effectively (with less trouble and negativity)
