Week 9
Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans
This article covers the importance of Black lives and history as it apples to Asian Americans. One point that I found to be profound was that America makes the death of Black individuals normalized and accepted in popular media and within human ideals yet the death of Asian people is rendered invisible to American media. Even though Asian and Asian Americans are considered a model minority because of their deaths "hold no value to the power structure" of American society. The author points out how Asian Americans sit between blackness and whiteness and in order to ascertain rights and be recognized as a prominent culture, Asian Americans must align themselves and advocate for Black lives as they are also marginalized. Solidarity Movements, this week's theme, perfectly correlates with this article as the author urges Asian Americans to shed their anti-black sentiments and realize that the promotion of other marginalized cultures and people helps to shed the model minority label for themselves and allow Asian Americans to be seen and recognized by popular media.
Question: What steps can college students take to organize both Asian and Black students along with allies to promote and create a solidarity movement?
