The reading Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans, by Soya Jung, relates to this week’s theme, “Solidarity Movements,” because she writes about what happened regarding the death of Michael Brown and explains how Asian Americans should be more active in all racial movements. In her piece, she mentions the story of Michael Brown, an African American teenager who was wrongfully killed by white police. He was shot, though he did not have any weapons or form of protection on him, and this is what began the protests in Ferguson, which ultimately sparked the Black Lives Matter movement across the nation. She then discusses the Asian American stereotype of model minority, which is almost contrary to the African American stereotype. For this reason is why Asian Americans should reach out to the African American community and even other minority communities to form solidarities with. We all face different forms of injustice, but it all ultimately comes from the same place: racism. Personally, I have noticed that there is not a great turnout of Asian Americans that partake in protests. The most turn out I’ve seen from Asian Americans in protests, that don’t have anything specifically to do with them or their people, is for the LGBTQIA movements, which I’ve mentioned in last week’s post. I believe that no matter how different we may be, injustice is injustice and as minorities, we are more similar to each other than different in the United States. Therefore, we should stand in solidarity for any group of people that face any type of oppression or injustice.

Question: Do you think African Americans support Asian Americans in their protests the same amount as Asian Americans do to them?

I chose to include this music video/song because the message of everyone supporting each other for one cause really reminded me of how we should all stand in solidarity for all who face oppression, as I mentioned in my blog.
