Week 8

The story of an Asian American college's aunt in article, Precariously Positioned: Asian American Women Students Negotiating Power in Academic Wonderland amazed me and made me realize that education is important to one's life and the value of cultural studies must be implemented and acquired by one's education.  On the other hand, going to school does not mean that you are "safe" on campus. Because you can only get limited help from authorities and those help might be as helpful as you expect them to be, even harmful sometimes. As mentioned in class that psychiatrists can prescribe patients with medication that calm you down, but they didn't actually cure you internally or permanently. Also, the patients' information is not confidential which putting patients at risk of seeing a doctor (to seek help). Another issue that education is constantly having is cutting budget, in our case the budget for ethnic studies  is being cut down and critically low enough that the ethnic study department has be shut down completely. Students feel disappointed and angry that the education they wanted is not provided and even if it is provided, it is not always safe.  I think the purposes of all these articles present are that students' right are deprivable, but at the same as a college student, we should be aware of our surroundings and be able to speak out our minds.

Questions:
Why there are many universities want to cut down the budget for ethnic studies?
Where do the funding of universities come from?
