Section A01
Week 9
In the reading, “Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans,” Soya
Jung brought up the close relationship between Asian Americans and other ethnic
group issues by introducing the Mike Brown Ferguson Incident. She also pointed out the stereotypical
differences between Asian Americans and other ethnic groups; while African Americans
seem to be aggressive, Asian Americans have the image of being introverted. This
stereotypical difference often makes Asian Americans “unheard” or not getting enough
attention on relative social issues. However, the model minority in general, regardless of ethnicity,
are treated with the same brutality. Therefore, solidarity is important among
minority groups.
In another reading
this week, “Building a Culture of Solidarity: Racial Discourse, Black Lives
Matter, and Indigenous Social Justice,” Santo F. Ramos mentioned the diverse culture
and traditions he observed from different ethnic groups and the gap they have
between each other that prevents the cooperation and solidarity. However, he
also agreed that this is an important issue. I found these two readings highly relevant
to the articles we had last week, as they all talked about the solidarity
between groups and are all encouraging Asian Americans to be more open-minded,
to care about other cultural issues and get involved. Note that we are all
within the model minority, we should be able to gather the advantages of each
group, strengthen ourselves as we all work towards a same target, to be treated
equally. This is why student activisms, as mentioned in last week, are such an
important action, as they bring students up together, show our demands, and motivates
solidarity.
The picture shows the solidarity among people of different colors.
Question: Is there
any cross ethnic/ cultural groups cooperation or student activism going on on
campus?
