Week 9
The article "Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans," by Soya Jung, discusses the significance of the racial movements that have erupted out of Ferguson, and why they matter to the Asian American community. Even though we are put on a pedestal as the model minority, that should not mean we should be dismissive of the recent acts by Ferguson protesters. Asian-Americans have had their own struggles, we've lost many individuals to certain acts of violence, yet there is little to no noise coming from the community.
When reading this article, I had a similar feeling of longing to the author. The Asian and Asian American community is a sleeping giant. There are individuals who are taking steps to fight against the oppression of the minority. Yet, when talking about the community as a whole, we aren't as mobilized as others. We must resist the actions taken that will harm the minorities we stand with. Ferguson is yet another catalyst for movements to rise up and continue to fight and resist. And, we must choose to help and come to the aid of others. There have been incidents, against Asians and Asian Americans, that were similar to Ferguson. We shouldn't choose not to fight, because little to no one else will care. We should use those to galvanize ourselves.
Question: Why aren't crimes against Asians and Asian-Americans covered as those against other communities?
