Week 8

In the article “What Asian Americans Are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice”, it discusses the idea of how Asian-Americans are out of place when it comes to protests among the country and how they are excluded in the conversation of injustice for black protests. For me, as an Asian-American, I care about the issues going on in America, however I do find difficulty in expressing my opinions. One reason could be because of how growing up, in my history classes, the books usually talks about black and white Americans and then very rarely go into depth about Asian-American history. Another reason, in my opinion, could be because of how I was raised. As a first-generation Chinese-American, my parents came here not knowing much English and just wanted to settle down, find work, and allow their kids to gain opportunities that they couldn’t get back in their home country. In turn, they never had much focus on what was going on in American society and the issues that came up like police brutality or injustice for other minority groups. Due to this shift in focus on raising their kids and dealing with their problems, the kids they raise have the similar mentality of not being educated or knowledge in the political issues within their country.

Question: How can the Asian-American community be more active in expressing their opinions on issues arisen in America?
