In the article by Putterman
suggests a lack of representation of Asian American bodies, yet that is not
necessarily the case. Asian Americans as suggested in the article are stepping
forward as activist, and continuing to strive for their voice to be heard. In
this article Putterman gives several examples of student activist at various
different university’s starting a movement to be other than the model minority
and have their histories told truthfully not by outsiders. I think article was
interesting by giving the reader an insight to issues that Asian Americans face
when it comes to social and racial movements. I believe it was a good article
because it discusses factors that turn off Asian Americans from these
movements, and how they have actually been making progress, that just gets
swept under the rug, when in comparison to other groups of color. Even though
Asian Americans stress an issue their issue can also be a same struggle for
another group, which is why standing in solidarity with other minorities is
important. I think it is important for
all people to see what social and racial movements are all about. Just as
Deloso discusses how she came from a strict Filipino family, so did I. Yet, I
was never afraid to go against what my family told me, I was then seen as a
black sheep because I spoke out and involved myself in all peoples of colors
movements. Just last year here at UC Davis, there was Black Lives Matter march
to Mrak hall to address and to support the overall movement. I felt it was
important for me to show my support, because I grew up in an all brown and
black neighborhood being the only Asian family, and the only Asian child in my
whole elementary school, until I went into middle school. I felt it was
important to address the issue of the extreme violence and racism towards black
young males. I also felt it was my duty because my boyfriend, a black man, has
continued to stereotypes and targeted her in Davis. Whether it was from
neighbors seeing a black man enter my home and call the police and state that there
was domestic abuse going on or to women clutching their purse as my boyfriend
approaches. Living in a society that just sees color and stereotypes, makes me
go out and fight for injustices. Even though I am a Asian women I stand for all
my brothers and sisters of color.
Question: How do we motivate Asian Americans to speak out more and join in the movement? How harmful is Asian Americans being silent instead of speaking out?
