In this weeks reading, the article “Why Ferguson Matters to Asian Americans” by Soya Jung was the most interesting for me to read. The reason being, the author highlights the importance when one minority group is being attacked, we should all as human beings stand up and fight no matter if white, black or asian. The article talks about the murder of Mike Brown by Ferguson Police officer Darren Wilson. This attack sparked a sense of protest not only among the african-american community but also among the asian-american community. The article continues saying the asian-american community has to fight for things such as the Ferguson case because the target for these aggressive scenarios can be all minority groups not only african american. To continue, these attacks can range from murder to little things such as harassment faced by asian-americans to be the model-minority. It all stems from ignorance towards minority groups and exactly that is what Soya Jung is alluding to in her article. This article was interesting for me personally because every time you hear about homicides of african-american by U.S police, in my opinion, the police is still not held fully responsible to their action. An example of this is the “stand your ground” law that made big headlines after the homicide of young african-american Trayvon Martin. It is still debatable who was at fault for his murder but after he got shot by the police, the “stand your ground” was held accountable and the police were not held fully responsible and, in my opinion, mishandled that situation. This leads me to my question: “To what extent should the black rights protest movement go, for it to stop these homicide of especially young african-americans and to what extent should other minority groups such as asian-americans help with the protests?”
I decided to add an article about the Trayvon Martin case in 2012 written by the Washington Post.
