Week 7
In modern society, many college students are becoming more uncomfortable with certain words, phrases, or ideas that may "trigger" them to feel scared and distressed. Many serious topics such as abuse, misogyny, and rape are practically being censored on campuses and even on the internet. I believe that people should not avoid things they are afraid of. Instead, they should learn how to confront and overcome things that actually do trigger painful memories. People today are so easily offended by everything, which I find to be silly because the world is obviously full of things that are unpleasant. For example, on the social media platform, Tumblr, I always see people requesting bloggers to tag certain trigger words such as "rape" and "domestic violence." People cannot expect the world to revolve around them and to be a safe, sheltered place all the time. This new subculture of putting trigger warnings on social media and campuses is creating a new generation of people who are too sensitive. This new generation is unable to analyze and think critically in the real world. An increasing amount of people are seriously developing mental disorders because society is fostering these students with "vindictive protectiveness."
Question: What does it mean to be politically correct?
