Victor Dionisio, Week 10 - A01

The very last article of week 10 was an accumulation of all the themes discussed throughout this winter quarter. This article talks about being a voice for those who were silenced due to the injustices they faced in society. For many years, institutions have oppressed people of color and because of this, they created false narratives in their heads that manipulated them into thinking they are not valid. Once they have realized it is time to stop being passive victims, it is now up to them to stand up and fight for our equality. Choosing to come together as a community, and becoming alliances with one another, is how we defeat those in systems of power, above all, the academia. “Strength in Numbers” allow the disadvantage to become the advantage. To fight for equal education, the oppressed, primarily Asian American women, must choose to shed light on the harsh truths that really go on within the corrupt walls of academia. One word that appears multiple times throughout the article is “woke”. This concept is defined as being able to gather necessary information through learned experiences due to a “shocking realization that“ many believed these systems of powers were trying to help us; but in reality their ultimate goal was all about wealth and capitalistic gains. Being “woke” is more than just being aware of the discrimination those in the bottom of the hierarchical system face on a daily basis, but rather being able to also take action and fight for a better society.
Question: What are some attainable ways we, as a community, can beat the system?
