Stacy Liu, A01, Week 7
For this week’s reading, we begin to read the chapter “May 14 and 16: ‘Do. Or Do Not. There Is No Try’: Radical Love as Pedagogy and Practice Part I.” The most impressive section in this week’s reading assignment is “Care Work: The Invisible Labor of Asian American Women”, which is written by Wei Ming Dariotis and Grace J. Yoo.
The most impressive thing I have regarded this chapter is the word “care work”. I learn that care work means the work in which someone provides emotional help and care to others and I start to realize that overwhelming care work will lead to emotional exhaustion. In addition, I also know that “Not all who care can perform the emotion work that is the primary component of care work, but it is often expected of and thus performed by Asian American women because of stereotypes of Asian American women as nurturing caregivers.” Although I do not feel that in my life because of my personal experience which I used to be cared for and helped by my French professor, I feel this stereotype of Asian Americans is reasonable because I also think Asian American women are easier to be close to. This section begins with a story that Wei chooses to talk with the student who writes “I hate the teacher. The class is the worst.” instead of directly giving an F. After read that, I really appreciate the professors who can do this work because this means they put extra workload on them and take the extra time to cure students. I strongly support to give Asian American women more attention and notice for their extra hard work.
Question: Why people have this stereotype of Asian American women?
