According to this week’s reading, it describes the difficulties for a female professor as a mother. According to “Mothering is Liberation: Giving Birth to Alagaan Pedagogy,” Professor Tintiangso-Cubales is an Asian American professor. Also, she is a mother, trying to find a balance between home and academia. At home, she is always constricted by the “motherhood.” The press publicizes traditional motherhood, which is taking care of families and giving up mother’s jobs. Professor Tintaingso-Cubales always doubts that whether she is a responsible mother. But she insists that the way to educate her daughter is more important than the pointless company. She tries to teach her daughter is an effective way.
Besides, when she is working, she always feels afraid that she will lose her jobs. According to Professor Tintiangso-Cubales, “along with questioning my ability to be a good mother, I was also stressed for fear that I was going to lose my job, not because I was a bad teacher or I did not fulfill my service to the university or the community, but because I did not have enough publications.” Even though she has a baby, she also works very hard, carrying her daughter to the conference meeting. Also, Professor Tintiangso-Cubales tries to help minority students. She tries to find a balance between home and academia. But one of the biggest problems is that she always lacks time to take care of her daughter. Luckily, her community helps her raise her child, providing opportunities to imagine a better world. Moreover, according to “Resistance Is Not Futile: From #adjuncthustle to Hell Yeah!”, it described her experience of how an Asian American become a good professor from a “broke” girl. She provides some advice that can help Asian Americans in the workplace.
From my perspective, Asian American mother is on the edge of academia. Asian American mothers need to be more hard-working either in the workplace or daily life by facing discrimination and the pressure of being a mother. We must respect every “mother” employee who devotes themselves to family and society.
Question: What can students do to relieve the pressure that female professors faced?
