Week 7

In one of this week's readings “Care Work: The Invisible Labor of Asian women" by Wei Ming Dariotis and Grace J.Yoo, the article talks about the things Asian Americans professors take certain actions that go unnoticed. Some of these things they do are "care work", which is described as "the physical, mental and emotional work put into nurturing and supporting another individual"(Yoo & Dariotis, 303). This extra work shows that they go beyond the requirements for their profession, yet they still are treated lesser to American professors. They have a lower promotion and tenure rate and their hard work goes unnoticed.

As described in the first paragraph, care work is extremely valuable in the Asian American community. Many Asians in university have had to leave their friends and families behind in order to study overseas. This situation that they are in could make them feel lonely, which is why it is important for us to be supporting each other. Especially during these times when discrimination towards Asian people is high, it's important we help each other and check in to make sure everyone is okay.

In the lecture, it was mentioned that international students may feel shy to introduce themselves or speak with people because they believe that their English isn't good enough. So what can we do as American students to help international students feel more comfortable to talk to us?
