This week’s reading reveals the truth behind the current situation
in the academy. In fact, the number of Asian stuff is increasing; however, this condition
is not decided by Asian’s ability. To prevent Asians from taking funding or important
positions, which are reserved for Americans. In the academy, they hire more
Asian. Thus, in the academy, Asians are discriminated against. After that, the author talks
about her experience. As an international scholar, besides the struggling study
burden, the burden of race discrimination, gender bias is much heavier than the
study pressure. It is true that international scholars do not have an advantage of
language. Every international scholar prepares and learns for a long time on
studying a foreign language. In addition, due to different cultures, it is hard
for international scholars to adapt to foreign life. Therefore, international
scholars and Asian Americans have fewer opportunities to find jobs. The positions
in the academy limit their developments. Many international scholars and Asian Americans
have the same experience and unfair treatment because other Americans do not
respect them from their hearts. However, I am really happy that more Asian Americans
and international scholars stand out to speak out our unfairness. The author
also mentions that she decides to write this book to let more people know the truth.
Like she mentions that “My hope lies in building necessary solidarity by
sharing our individual stories and addressing the unfolding systematic
unfairness in academia. Thus, structural inequality remains normalized and
perpetuated. So, writing this piece is feminist activism to remind us once
again: the personal is political.” I really like this week’s reading, and it
helps me learn about the cruel truth behind the academy and the real feeling of
international scholars.
