In this week's article "Empire of Death and the Plague of Civic Violence," written by Darrell Y. Hamamoto, the issue of normalizing mass murder and high violence is discussed. In this reading, the Texas Tower massacre is used as an example to why gun control should be strengthened. An ex-Army was able to purchase a gun and shoot 15 people within this case. It is a clear sign that guns should not be accessible to everyone without having a strict procedure. For example, Hamamoto uses Ted Bundy, Randall Woodfield, and John Wayne Gacy, Jr. has murderers who specialized in specific type of victims--the races of the victims. Hamamoto brings up an interesting kind of murder, race murder. Race murder is determined by the race of the victims killed. In this section of the reading, he explains how "white supremacy is displayed against people of color and minorities" in the several race murders such as Ted Bundy's tendency to target white college women and John Wayne Gacy, Jr.'s liking for gay male victims. Society has normalized this idea that white males are superior to people of other races. Personally, I believe Hamamoto made a great connection between serial killers/murders to social/cultural aspects of society.
Question: How can Asian Americans help change the unwanted normalization/idolization of mass murder/serial killers from films/social media?
