I thought that the article "The criminalization of immigration and the privatization of immigration detention: implication for justice" did a good job explaining how the criminalization of immigrants and the profits of private prison are connected in the increasing rate of detention of illegal immigrants. One point that the authors made that stood out to me was that there were laws in some states that criminalized essential aspects of immigrants' lives, thereby making it easier for immigrants to get into trouble. It is somewhat shocking to me that some states do not allow undocumented immigrants to go to school or obtain a license. Because of this, even though they are not troublemakers, some immigrants are caught and punished for doing normal things. It also makes sense why the prison system has not changed considering how many people in charge are driven more by profits than the security of the inmates. Another interesting point that was made was the psychosocial consequences that undocumented immigrants have to deal with. I never thought about how I take for granted the fact that I can live my life freely without free of being deported or arrested. However, undocumented immigrants have to deal with that stress and are punished severely for minor infractions.
Question: What are some ways to deal with undocumented immigration?
