Week8 Bradley Kitaoka Section:A04

For this week’s reading I read Teaching Justice and Living Peace: Body, Sexuality, and Religious Education in Asian-American Communities written by Boyung Lee. This article talks about how Asian-Americans are struggling with their sexual identity because of their religion or culture. For example, many Asian-Americans go to churches like the Anglican communion or the United Methodist Church and both of these churches look down on homosexuality. Kids that do come out to their parents often feel backlash from their parents because they don’t accept them for who they are or want to keep their homosexuality a secret. Also because of Asian-American culture the views of women and their sexuality and body put them into a box. What I mean by this is that Asian-American women are supposed to keep their virginity until they are married. And then once they are married their bodies are somewhat owned by their husband. Sometimes it can be so extreme that before Asian-American get married they have surgery to restore their hymen. This article shows how Asian-American culture is dominated by heterosexual men as they control women and discriminate those in the LGBTQ community.

Question: Has Asian-American changed at all over the years and taken a step in the right direction to respect women and LGBTQ individuals better?
