A02 Group 5 Pre-Screening

Objective:

Our objective is to make the general public aware of the misrepresentation of the South Asian culture within TV shows. These misinterpretations have lead to many effects on the South Asian culture such as cultural appropriation, stereotypes, and exploitation. An example that we will focus mainly on is the Indian character Apu from the Simpsons who is voiced by a white actor. This character has lead to mockery and jokes of the South Asian race as well as stereotypes (accent, body type, skin color, etc.) to come about. We wanted to explore how and why these misinterpretations were formed in the first place. We’d also want to know how and why these misinterpretations caused all the negative effects on the South Asian culture and race in America.

Audience:

We are trying to influence the general public, but putting emphasis on those who are unaware of these issues.
Work in progress:

Please ignore the logo in the middle of the video that will be taken out. Most of the audio has been record except for some parts, however, we would like feedback on the overall content. We would also like your opinion on the editing of the video as well as feedback on how to shorten our content due to the time constraints.

Group 5 A01:

We think that your SAPSA was very well put together. There are a few things that we think you should change though. The biggest thing we noticed was that after a minute into the video, the background becomes just a pure black screen. It is understandable since you are talking about your topic so it might be hard to have something in the background. We also see that you guys don't want it to seem irrelevant. However, we think having some kind of visuals while you are speaking will make the video itself seem less information heavy. As for the problem of shortening your content due to the time constraint:

• We think that you could speak a bit faster in your video. Maybe it is just us, but the tone seems to be rather slow(good in that the message is as clear as can be, bad in that it takes up more time)
• Maybe remove the clip in the beginning where the male asks Superwoman if she experienced a lot of racism
• This is because it isn't something that only South Asian cultures may encounter
• Introducing Apu takes about 10 seconds, can definitely shorten by going straight to the point. Maybe just say "A tv character who embodies all of these problems is Apu from The Simpsons"

Overall, we think your video is well put together in terms of dialogue. The message is clear and we can see what exactly you are trying to address in your video.
