Week 8 Jiaming Mai_ A02

For this week’s reading, I read the article "I Would Always Rather be Abnormal Than Holistic: Nine Micro-Essays," by Shana Bulhan Haydock. The author suggested that it is fine to be different and abnormal. There were no such rules as “a completed individual should be holistic” and people can’t force mental health issues to be cured immediately like a physical disease. Personally, I agreed with Shana’s ideas because scars in the heart were more terrible than the physical scar. It is invisible and perhaps it will never be fixed. Some problems with our current civilization were that people still have a very low tolerance and respect to those individuals in need. The majority worship people with great abilities, powers, and resources. Individuals like a patient with mental issues were mostly to be abandoned by society and that is why exactly happening now. Something that I found interesting from this article was one of Shanna’s quotes “I want to be able to be broken and fucked up.”    It is no doubt that being nice or normal is beneficial, but I also agree with Shanna’s points that people should be real and accept their flaws.

Question: What can we do to help these people from recovering from mental health issues?
