Week 7
After reading Hana E. Brown’s article “Refugees, Rights, and Race: How Legal Status Shapes Liberian Immigrants' Relationship with the State”, I learned so much about the different living experiences in the United States between refugees and immigrants. Though both may originally come from the same country, once they have entered the US, refugees’ permanent immigration is basically guaranteed unlike immigrants especially those without a green card. It is also a controversy that Refugees are protected by the government with welfare, job opportunities, and many other benefits but they provide a very low number of human capital. Simultaneous, immigrants can bring more capital to the society while they are treated way worse by the government. The difference to me is unfair since both groups are starting a new life in the United States so they should be treated equally upon arrival to the land. They both work hard enough to earn a spot as a potential US citizen. Such difference can only create a division among people within the same race or birth country.
My question is: should immigrants and refugees share the same rights and have the same experience while starting a new life in the United State?
