Yidi Chen ASA002 Week 6
After reading, Opening the Box: An International Asian Woman Scholar's Fight, written by Akiko Takeyama, I realized that international teachers face more problems than the local faculties. In the reading, as a Japanese cultural anthropologist, trained in the United States, she had lots of experiences of many types of misconduct than her colleagues. Although her colleague tried to persuade her not to report these students to the college because the hearing would most likely put her on trial to prove the misconduct, rather than questioning the students themselves, which might bring her more stress and pain, she insisted to defend herself and showed her dignity. She must take a lot of brave to make that decision. For me, as an international student, I would consider a lot in order to make such decisions. One of the biggest issues is the language barrier. I can not make sure that I could understand everything during such process and I also don't have confidence to explain or defend myself.
