People like to categorize others. Whether you
are male or female, marriage or single, mother or not, professor or not, young
or old, white or color. It seems like categorizing people will provide more
insight into an individual. It is true that sometimes these categories might
share common characteristics. But is that right to do so? Are we going to
impose all the expectations and stereotypes toward the individuals in the group? As
mentioned in the reading, the mother should be spending a large amount of time with
their children. But what about the father? Why we only expect fathers have the right
to fully devote their time in their work while mothers should be competent to
focus on both? According to research, in the COVID-19 period, male scholars’ the publication number is not affected while female scholars’ publication number is
strictly declined. So, who is taking care of the children at home? This expectation
of female should be doing the mothering in the family and emotional labor in
work exist for a long time. So, every time when the female doesn’t focus on
these expects, people might consider they are not doing their job which is a kind
of discrimination towards women. However, it seems like the male is carrying
less or concentrated expectations than women.
Questions:
In the case of mothering expectation, I don’t
really understand why people are so cared about whether the female is taking
care of the kids or male is taking care of the kids? And why people expect the mother
take care of the kids more (except for the feeding part), even though the male is
also important in raising the kids?
