Tian Tian, A03, Week 6 Blog

Week 6 Blog
This week, we read the reading “opening the box: an international Asian American woman’s fight.” Reading her story of the fight against difficulties from various aspects, I feel a lot. As an international scholar, she needs to face not only unequal chances like other Asian American women but also the language barrier, acculturation issues, accent discriminations, etc. To reserving the positions for U.S. citizens, even the policy is not friendly to international scholars. To get tenure, international scholars need to pay more. Akiko mentions in the article that she recognizes the systemic over the interrogation of women’s work and the relative ease with which white male faculty moved through the process. Luckily, Akiko won the tenure finally. However, we know many international scholars lose in this battle.
In this reading, Akiko also mentions international students. She writes, “It is especially challenging for international students who are not native speakers of English. They need extra guidance, feedback, and editing of their papers from faculty.” In school, international students are also minority groups. I am an international student, and I am indebted that some professors give more assistance to us. English is our second language. To catch up with the ideas which teachers taught in class, we need to pay more attention and more time reviewing after class. I do think both international scholars and international students need more attention and assistance.

Question: What could we do to build a friendly environment for international scholars?
