This week's readings were Akiko Takeyama. "Opening the Box: An International Asian Woman Scholar's Fight" and Kaozong N. Mouavangsou. "Hmong Does Not Mean Free: The Miseducation of and by Hmong Americans". Professor Takeyama's story was an eye-opener. She faced so many difficulties in her fight for tenure. Even after much difficulty, she successfully ends up on the other side of the system as she joined the faculty and became part of the decision makers. She was in a position where she could see the gender and racial discrimination that was practiced from the inside, in her department. The hardships she faced are unfortunate, nonetheless, this is an inspirational story. It is the story of a woman who made it against all odds. For whom it was made for difficult than the average scholar.

It is regrettable that professor are assessed on their accents and the color of their skin instead of their knowledge and ability to teach. It is always said that Asians are very intelligent and work harder in academia. This should mean that they are more than qualified to be teaching other students. If anything, it should be seen as a huge advantage not disadvantage. Ask any student, do they want to learn from professors who know their material and teach well or from professors who have the perfect accent? 

Question: Do we think that current situations are better for Asian American scholars than in Professor Takeyama's time? How much better?
