Week 6
For this week’s reading, “Opening the Box: An International Asian Woman Scholar’s Fight.”, which is from Akiko Takeyama, let me feel more impressive. This story is still related to international faculties’ difficulties in academia, that they are paid less, harder to hire for they need much more document, and struggling with language and acculturation issues, and so on. The author here Akiko (2019) is a Japanese cultural anthropologist who taught in a college. She experienced a bunch of students plagiarized in her class which this phenomenon did not appear in other professors’ classes, although she worked so hard to prepare and taught the class.
I have a question here, do students cheat more frequently in the class which taught by an international professor? As a college student, I do not think this phenomenon related to Akiko herself but related to the course itself. Besides these, I can feel what Akiko feels in her academia because we both from other countries. I know the feeling when she had a lot of language issues in planning the course, writing the syllabus, and teaching the course. As for me, I mostly worry about can Americans understand my English or can they read my English writing tasks, instead of I do assignments in English.
What’s more, I totally agree with the sentence, “I wish international scholars, including myself, shared their promotion and tenure review experiences openly and built a collective knowledge and strategy forum” from the part “Lessons to Learn”. I think experiences are the most valuable things in the world which cannot be bought by money and we cannot experience many experiences by ourselves. Obviously, other experiences are very good lessons for us to improve ourselves.
