Sitian Zhang ASA002 A02 Week 6
From the weekly reading and the class, we had this week, both of them reveal the cruel truth that Asian people especially Asian women are experiencing unequal treatment in education and working areas. Also, as the reading mentioned that international female professors have fewer opportunities and lower salaries than local or professors who are US citizens. Also, they have a lower promotion rate in Universities. This kind of thing happens all the time in the United States.
For me personally, as an International student studying abroad in the United States, I do encounter similar situations during the years I stayed in the United States. I figured that it's really hard for international students to find a fitting internship in the United States because I don't have a green card or I'm not a US citizen. On the other hand, international students are charged higher for the tuition. At the same time, international students receive lower scholarships in universities. They are mainly not qualified because of identity since they are not Americans.
Also, my friends' ever told me one thing happened during his math discussion. The TA asked students to partner up and there's one Asian guy who was assigned to a group. The American girl refused to talk to him until he said I'm not Chinese. After this, they started discussing the math problem. Asian people are receiving negative attitudes from the mainstream in the United States. The Asian guy has to clarify that he's not Chinese in order to protect himself but this differentiation also separates the Asian group. I cannot judge whether this is right or not but it did hurt my feeling a bit.
