Jiyao Liu, A02, Week8

In the article “Resistance Is Not Futile: From #adjuncthustle to Hell Yeah!”, the author talks about her own experience as an adjunct professor in the university. “Although my life in no way compares to that of low-wage immigrant workers who work in garment factories, I face conditions that could be described as exploitative in my occupation as an academic laborer.”, this is what O’Brien says in the article. In fact, as a professor, she spends a long time on working but cannot get corresponding wage. For example, she teaches three or even five classes at different campuses, but she still needs to worry about her job and wage, which means she cannot get corresponding job security. The O’Brien decides to support women of color in academia, so she set up a group on Facebook which is to encourage, mentor and support faculty as Women of Color in Academia. Also, this group is secret and not public. In the end, it has a positive result.

I used to think that being a professor was a stable and secure job, but after reading this article, I find the difficulties for being a professor. Thus, I think the salary for professors should increase since it costs a lot and spends a long time to train a good professor. It is a pity if some talented people choose not to become professors just due to the low wage, and our education would also be affected.
