Frank Sang, A04, Week6

From the reading  "Hmong Does Not Mean Free: The Miseducation of and by Hmong Americans" by Kaozong N. Mouavangsou, I notice that the Hmong community in America has faced a lot of difficulties about inequality, especially in education. At the author's young age, she tried to achieve equal educational experience and treatment, but her race stopped her from having what she really wanted. And the more sad thing is that in order to feel a sense of belonging, people from different races sometimes need to give up their original culture and try to accept the new culture in their life. It seems to be unfair and helpless in nowadays society.

When I studied in Los Angeles, I had many American born Chinese friends. They have the same race as mine but speak different languages. I have to admit that even though we all have a similar appearance, but the insides are totally different. They have to give up their own culture even though their parents do not so as to feel better in American society. There is nothing about right or wrong, but to me, I do not wish that this type of life will come to my own life.

Question: How to have a sense of belonging when you are in a country with a different culture?
