ASA002 A04 Yun Han Week6

In this week's reading "Hmong Does Not Mean Free: The Miseducation of and by Hmong Americans," the author Kaozong N. Mouavangsou describes the unequal experience of the Hmong community in America. The author grew up as a Hmong girl and believed she needed to excel in education to receive equal treatment. The author then provides some background information about the Hmong community to further explain the culture. She uses the diary format to demonstrate how the race causes some discrimination. The author encourages people of ethnic groups to know their own culture and history and free minds of miseducation.

For some international students who study abroad, it is common for them to have some difficulties to find a sense of belonging. Meanwhile, they also have the problem of facing discrimination. How to overcome these challenges during the study life becomes an important issue. The most important step is to learn to recognize and understand your own privilege, which is the same meaning described by the author.
