We can
never separate the topic of immigration from American culture. Largely
publicizing the “American Dream”, the United States has attracted all those people
who wish for a brighter future. Huge sacrifices are made when people all over
the world determine to leave their home and seek chances for America. But they
immigrate anyway because they hope to find more opportunities and freedom here.
However, in the journal by Ackerman and Furman, “The Criminalization of
Immigration and the Privatization of the Immigration Detention: Implications
for Justice”, I can feel my anger when realizing those private prisons corporations
are taking advantages from immigrants, even though I am not involved in the
immigration issue. I have to say the United States was tricky in immigration
issue as they welcomed and encouraged immigrants at first but later blamed them
for all public problems. It is already unfair for immigrants to take over the
most basic jobs with least chances getting promoted, and it is even more
disappointing and disgusting to make profits on immigrants who come for justice
and opportunities in the United States. Do these private prisons corporations feel
guilty when they make money based on the pain of hard working immigrants? I can
feel cold, rude and disappointed when related it to the social phenomenon
nowadays that people seek every chance to make a fortune even it means to destroy
other people’s benefits.
Question:
How can we elevate the status of immigrants in the United States?
