Anneka Christie A02 Week 7

In Ackerman and Furman's "The Criminalization of Immigration and the Privatization of the Immigration Detention: Implications for Justice," they discuss how the relationship between the criminalization of immigration of recent decades and the privatization of prisons shape the criminal justice response to immigration in this country. This mentality along with recent legislation has stripped away immigrant rights. Immigrants have been blamed as the cause of problems in America unjustly and without substance.
These two factors have been around throughout history but has been expanding quickly recently and exhibit "the global spread of neoliberal policies." The criminalization of immigrants has spurred a conflict between for-profit correction facilities who rely on detaining immigrants against the industries of construction and agriculture which "rely on undocumented immigrant labor." More awareness and understanding has been brought to these issues and hopefully will be enough to spark real change.

Question: The article talks about how different social and political climates have influenced criminalization of immigration. What examples, if any, are there about climates that have decreased the criminalization of immigration and the mentality many have about illegal aliens?
