Blog Entry:

               In this week’s lecture, we discussed about the concept of neoliberalism. The idea where the economy liberal in the sense that there is free trade, deregulation, and privatization. In the reading, the authors discuss the criminalization of immigrations and the privatization of the immigration detention. After reading the paper, I feel that many of the issues that immigrants experience is from neoliberalism. The paper discussed that immigrants are often looked in a negative light and are subjected into this ‘criminal’ image. I, too, believe they are seen this way, because many private organizations who bring immigrants over tend to overrule immigrants with an iron fist and if immigrants can’t meet their standards they are seen as unlawful. Neoliberalism sounds good in theory, because the government is less involved, and transactions are done on the individuals’ terms. However, it’s at the mercy of the individual’s morals and values. Since society already has this building idea that immigrants are bad or should be assimilated, a neoliberal society would feed on this. Thus, those ideals would be implanted in the individual’s private business, so when immigrants work for this business they suffer tremendously.
