In the era of Trump, it is not unfamiliar to hear issues about immigration policies. In 2017, Trump enacted a new immigration policy which banned nationals from eight countries, reduced refugee admissions to the lowest level, and reversed the decline in arrests of unauthorized immigrants. Therefore, promoting criminalization of immigrants. As discussed in the reading: The criminalization of immigration and the privatization of the immigration detention: implications for justice, criminalization of immigrants does cause more social problems in our society. One of the problems is that corporate-owned private prisons are exploiting the immigrants. Private prisons are also lack in culturally trained staffs leading to improper treatment of the immigrant’s prisoners. Coming from a country that was established upon immigrants, it is an irony that USA policies encourage social injustice towards the immigrants. In 2015, There were 43 million foreign-born immigrants that live in the States, this number add up to 14% of the whole population. While some people assume that immigrants only cause problems and therefore need to be criminalized, it is by the contributions of immigrants that US can become one of the largest economies in the world. Moreover, the free flow of capital and labors due to international ties give US the upper hand in this globalized world. Unlike other countries that have less diverse population of immigrants, criminalization of the immigrants will definitely bring consequences to US.

Question:

Do the benefits of immigration in the US outweigh the consequences?Why or Why not?
