Week 7_Julia Wells_Section 4

From Ackerman and Furman’s article about the rise in the criminalization of immigration, connects with Wayne’s guest lecture about human work trafficking. Many of the immigrants or people who looking to come to America want something better for their family and their future. The United States offers that new light of a new beginning, but are unable to treat each individual immigrant with fair or open opportunities. Immigrants are easy people to scam because they are unaware of how people can manipulate the United States system into their favor, and most immigrants are willing to do anything to get into the United States and create a new home in the U.S. I remember watching a Spanish movie called “Under the Same Moon” and it was about a woman who left her child in Mexico and left to the United States to try and gain a green card or get enough money to bring her child back with her. The son was staying with his Grandmother at the time, but she died a few years later, so the son ran away to the United States as well to find his mother. The movie exemplified the unfortunate challenges that immigrants have to face and the mistreatment they get. It also shows the fear and desperation of immigrant when authorities come and arrest them to deport them back to their country of origin. Immigration is a very real issue that occurs and I think many people look down on immigrants because of their background and history. The opposing question is how can the United States help every single immigrant individual in a fair manner that benefits both parties? Does the United States want to help immigrant because they are obligated to by the public or they help them because it benefits our country?
