This week, I read The criminalization of immigration and the privatization of the immigration detention: implication for justice by Ackerman and Fuman. When reading this article, I realized that how complex the illegal immigration problem in the United States is, and how hard it is to come up with an effective solution. When there weren't so many illegal immigrants, the law was made to treat such act as a mild offense. However, now more and more states have made their own laws to criminalize illegal immigrants, and more seriously, building private detention centers for them. This was shocking for me that people are detained in private facilities for profit: yes, they are breaking the law, but they are people, not business. However, I also realized that there was a huge increase in illegal immigrants during the past years, and there are not so many public resources to detain them. I don't thing simply building such private detention centers is a way to solve the problem. First of all, we have to know what impact they could make to the American society, focusing on problems such as employment, crime, and education. If they are just wanting a better life by their labor, maybe we should open some chances to them? Even when the parents are illegal immigrants, shouldn't we treat the children evenly in schools? I think to solve the problems, we should do much more research and works to find out.
