Neoliberalism has given undocumented people a bad reputation. In some states, the laws have made it almost impossible for an immigrant to live their daily life. It is illegal for them to seek employment, purchase electricity, obtain a driver's license, and other necessary things you need in order to survive in the US. In "The criminalization of immigration and the privatization of the immigration detention: implications for justice" article, Ackerman and Furman shed light on privatization. Privatization would allow revenue for the many other small companies that support it. For example, the transportation services that transport inmates to and from places would have some income. Prisons care more about money than the safety of those who are in prison. The article also states that immigrants are seen on the same level as criminals and should be penalized in an equal way. Since it has become overcrowded, prison has become a place for non-citizens to be thrown into. Prison can effect the mental health and well being of those who are in it and I think it is unfair for immigrants to deal with the same consequences that real criminals face. Do immigrants really deserve to be on the same level as criminals? Is there another way to deal with this situation other than throwing them in prison?
