This week's theme of immigration is extremely relevant to the current social climate of the United States. In Alissa R. Ackerman's and Rich Furman's "The criminalization of immigration and the privatization of the immigration detention: implications for justice," the main takeaway is how inequitable the American criminal justice system has treated, and continues to treat, undocumented immigrants. Over the years, there has also been an increase in the incarceration of immigrants with the help of privatized prisons, which unfortunately started rising after the 9/11 attacks because apparently, white Americans cannot discern between the actions of a few and those of an entire race whenever people of color are involved. It also doesn't help that this fear-mongering mentality is perpetuated by people currently in the highest positions of power in America, claiming that immigrants "steal jobs" or are "rapists" and vilifying them every chance possible but immediately turn a blind eye when the immigrants are white.
Question: Not to be super pessimistic or anything, but is America essentially fucked beyond repair?
