Mark Tseung Putterman talks about the struggles of Asian Americans on campus in his article What Asian Americans Are Bringing to Campus Movements for Racial Justice. This week's lecture, a guest speaker talked about the perception of Asian Americans in the US: no matter what generation of immigrants Asian Americans are, we will always be perceived as foreigners compared to other minority groups. I find a strong parallel between this notion and the topics discussed in the article. On campuses across the US, Asian American student populations are getting bigger and "tend to eclipse those of their Black, Latino, and Native American peers", yet many Asian American students still feels isolated on campus, which causes them to form these safe spaces. This phenomenon distances Asian Americans further from the campus, making them outsiders in their own environment. For Asian Americans to change their fate, we must first realize that we belong. But how should we break out of our safe space and make our voices heard?
