Week 1_Yueming Tan, A01

By reading the article by Professor Valverde, I learned about the discrimination and oppression of Asian American women in society and the workplace. I feel very shocked about the life experience of Professor Valverde. As an Asian American, I have never been discriminated against by others. (probably because I have not experienced too much) At the same time, Professor Valverde mentioned a "Jealous, Unfriendly Colleague" in her article. This part has aroused my interest because I feel that only people who are not as good as you will be jealous of you. On the other hand, it reminds me that Asian Americans are often seen as “forever foreigners” or “model minority” in American society and they have never really integrated into the mainstream of the United States. Regardless of their efforts and academic and professional success, Asian Americans are still mistreated, such as paying less than whites who have the same qualifications and abilities.

I have a question about this article, and this makes me wonder. Professor Valverde did not elaborate on the critical role of her mix race background in the profession. For example, what are the significant impact and part of her Vietnamese American identity in her workplace? If this is a factor, how can she change or respond to other people's understanding and misunderstanding of her identity?

I chose this picture because Professor Valverde is like a female warrior. Even after suffering various unfair treatments, she still stood up and fought back.
