Week 4 - Tristan Kwik - A03

In the article Ethics & “Breaking Bad”: Developing and practicing ethical skills, written by Amy Block Joy, she explicitly describes the learning process of practicing ethical skills and having ethical knowledge. Block Joy explains that there is a distinct difference between “knowing the right thing to do” and how it’s “not the same as doing what’s right” (71). Learning how to develop these skills to make better decisions is important because decisions need to be made everyday, and these decisions should be good decisions. In her article, Block Joy says that the best way to learn these skills is by allowing people to practice ethics through open and respectful discussions. This statement is something that I strongly agree with. People need to make ethical decisions because these decisions will affect them, and sometimes even affect others. For instance, Block Joy uses the TV series “Breaking Bad” as an example of ethics, good choices, and bad choices. Although the main character, Walt, has strong family values, he becomes an underground drug lord to support his wife and kid. He constantly has to balance doing what’s good and doing what’s bad.

Question: Who gets to decide what is ethically “good” and “bad?” How can there be an objective perspective if every person is subjective?
