Week 3 Ziyu Wang A02

Manee Moua talks about the impact of model minority myth in Asian communities in her autoethnography Navigating Graduate Education as a First-Generation, Hmong American Women: An Autoethnography. Model minority suggests that since Asian Americans are doing so where economically and academically wise, there is no need for any action to help the Asian Communities. This is a low blow to Asian communities because not only does this stir controversies and discrimination in the Asian community, it also causes friction between Asian Americans and other Minorities as well. While Asian Americans are usually benefits from this claim, other minorities such as African Americans and Hispanics are getting the short end of the stick. This cause them to be treated and perceived unfairly relative to Asian Americans, and also develops racism between these communities. The myth also is detrimental within the Asian communities as well, since not all Asians are represented when it comes to this myth. For example, like Manee Moua said, the Hmong Americans are severely underrepresented in the community thus they do not benefit from this myth. So my question is: what steps must we take to ensure all sub groups of the community is represented?
