Week 4_Xiao_Zhang_Section 03

In the article Ethics and “Breaking Bad”: Developing and practicing ethical skills, Amy Block joy says that knowing what’s right doesn’t necessarily leads people to do what’s right. Because there are many concerns in real life that make people hesitate to make real actions. Need real tutorials and real life simulation training to increase people’s confidence in doing ethically. She apply this kind of educational practice in her classroom teaching – instructor is not just simply giving information but asking questions, giving situations and being interactive to make student better understand what is ethics and reflect their own decisions. Examples of the TV series “the Breaking Bad”. She mentions an interesting topic about ethics: means and ends. By give a experimental classroom to students, students are able to discuss sensitive and challenging topics in safe environment. This greatly help student to learn making decisions.

Amy Block Joy gives a very interesting interpretation about the relation between knowledge and actual actions in daily ethical life. I have very similar situation mentioned in the book – I know what is right but sometimes I would make concessions due to the fear of worsening relationship with someone. Or sometimes I overly rely on my feelings and do something I feels good rather something is right. Later, I read several books and learned several quite interesting and inspirational ideas.

First, we should define what is right and what is wrong – those violating our values is something that we don’t want to do. When others are doing something that doesn’t fit or even violate our own values/beliefs, we should definitely say no. However, it doesn’t necessarily weaken the relationship or create tension because while good friends or co-workers are close to each other, they are still independent human beings – differentiation is a very important thing in relations and personal development. However, when you are giving advice or try to prevent bad (not ethical) things from happening, a good advice is not to judge on person or give comments on how not ethical the person is, but give your opinion on things he did. Just like in the TV series “Breaking Bad”, we all know Walter is not a devil because what he did have a good reason, but they way or let’s say the thing he approaches the good purpose is not ethical.

Questions: How to define ethics? Does everyone have different ethics?
