Week 3_ Alexandra Tan_A01

Being the "model minority" has actually caused a lot of issues for AAPIs. As stated by Moua in "Navigating Graduate Education as a First Generation, Hmong American Woman: An Autoethnography", due to the model minority myth, others often ignore the struggles of AAPIs. The myth creates a false pretense that Asian Americans are all doing well, and rarely struggle. Because of this stereotype, Asian Americans are expected to perform to a certain level and are often seen as simply failures otherwise. In addition, the academic and corporate support systems for Asian Americans are simply lacking because of the held idea that Asians simply do not need the help. How do we break out of this stereotype so that people see the struggles of AAPIs for what they are, instead of writing them off because other asians are "doing well"?  I believe to be able to raise awareness of what negative impacts "positive" stereotypes can have, will help improve the support available for AAPIs.
