Week 2
Among week
2’s readings, I would very much like to discuss about the research, “Beyond
Tiger Mom Anxiety: Ethnic, Gender and Generational Differences in Asian
American College Access and Choices”. It was the word choice “tiger mom” in the
title that first catches my attention. However, I found great attachment to
this paper even though I cannot be identified as an Asian American student but rather
an international Asian student.
The research
compared and contrasted factors that heavily influence Asian Americans’ choices
to college. When I thought back on myself, I realized my process
of college application was the example that complied mostly with the paper’s
conclusion. I had never thought of the choice not going to college, and I believed
the reason falls into ethnicity and college-generation. Raised in China, a nation
involves billions of people, I am perfectly acknowledged that only through going
to higher education can I be competent and get access to better resources, so
my value on college is high. Meanwhile, both of my parents were graduated from
college and they expected me to do the same. Then that’s not too surprising
that as a second-generation college girl, I would admit parents influenced me
most during college application. And the reason behind is just like the one in
the paper, I had such trust in my parents not only because they have always been
my closest people, but also because they are experienced and highly educated.
